According to available data from Kids Count, 28.6% of Greenwood County children are currently living in poverty. This means our children are at risk of malnutrition and other health issues caused by deficiency of quality foods. Research shows that hungry children have poorer mental and overall health, excessive or unexcused absences, suffer greater rates of behavioral disorders, lacks the ability to concentrate, and are less prepared to learn when they are in school.
The Weekend Backpack Program’s goal is to improve children’s health and overall quality of life by removing the barrier of hunger. This in turn will assist them in realizing their best possible selves.
Currently all elementary and primary schools within Greenwood County School Districts 50, 51, 52 participate in the Weekend Backpack Program.
